“Ahhhh, I love that smell!” exclaims my stepdaughter as I walk through her room, burning sage.
Every month after a thorough deep cleaning of our home, I practice a space-clearing ritual throughout the entire house to clear any residual stagnant energies.
Your home has many uses. It provides shelter, a place to sleep, eat, relax and even work. Your home is essentially a container for your life. And while you might keep your physical space tidy, you might feel that it’s missing that lighter, sparkly vibe.
Quite simply, when the energy of your home feels calm, you’ll feel calm.
Disharmonious energy in your home can be caused by arguments, people, traumatic events, even the television being on all the time. This energy can collect in corners or whole rooms. You might even notice how one room in your home feels better than the rest.
With some simple feng shui practices and space clearing, your entire home can feel calm and balanced.
Here’s the ritual I practice monthly:
Clean Your Home
Beginning with a home that’s been thoroughly cleaned helps to break up any existing energies and it’s the first step in helping you feel better in your physical environment. Be sure to wipe down surfaces, walls, sweep, mop and/or vacuum floors. Also be sure to empty all garbage cans within the home, again removing any unwanted energy.
Bring Your Best Self
Be sure to bring the best version of yourself to the space clearing. Try going for an invigorating walk, practice yoga, even dance to move and lift your own energetic vibration. This will help to clear anything out of your own energy field before you space clear.
You’ll begin by clapping your hands from the floorboards up towards the ceiling as high as you can go around the entire perimeter of each room. Paying particular attention to the corners of the room, as energy will typically collect there.
Clapping breaks up stubborn, dense energy. You’ll begin to notice a difference in the sound as you clap. Some spots will sound more muted than others, this is an indication of stuck energy. You’re encouraged to continue clapping until the sound shifts into more of a crisp, clear sound.
Burning Sage, Unless You Have Pets…
Now you’re ready to burn that sage! If you have a “smudge stick”, a bundle of sage tied together, you’ll want to light the tip of the smudge stick with a lighter or candle. Be sure to keep the smudge stick, lit side down into a shallow bowl or ashtray, then walk the perimeter of each room again, burning the sage.
If you want to get really witchy, use an abalone shell for your smudge stick and fan the smoke with a turkey feather the way shamans do. We’ve got plenty of wild turkeys running around our home, so picking up spare feathers are simple.
Pointing the smudge stick, lit side down will eliminate any embers from flying up and charring rugs or furniture as you go, I learned this the hard way!
Important Note about pets: Last winter our cat Pablo developed a cough. The first thing my vet asked was if we burn sage or incense frequently. Apparently pets can develop respiratory sensitivities to these combustibles.
If you want to use something different than burning sage, then opt for a space clearing spray. Many metaphysical shops sell these, but you can easily make your own.
Making Space Clearing Spray: Place approx 10 drops each of lavender, clary sage & peppermint essential oils into a 2oz glass spray bottle, then fill with purified/filtered water. Shake and spray as needed.
Ring That Bell
After you’ve smudged or sprayed, it’s time to ring your bell. Any hand bell will do, even jingle bells work well. Walk around the room and ring the bell, waiting each time until the sound dissolves, then ring again.
I actually love using my singing bowl for this. Its deep resonant sound sends its healing vibration into the room as I chant the White Tara mantra, symbolic for calling in peace and sanctuary.
Build Your Altar
Once you complete the space clearing, you can build a small altar in the center of the home, for most this is the living room. This altar will act as a container for your intentions of your clean, clear space.
Set Your Intentions
What do you want to manifest in this home? Think about what you want, rather than what you don’t want. You can write these down, place them on the altar and light a white candle.
Smell of a Rose
I love wrapping up the space-clearing with a rose water spray. Rose water evokes the spirit of Divine Mother, a lovely nurturing energy to call into your home. Walk around each room for one final round, spraying the rosewater. While this last step is not mandatory, I like using it as a beautiful way to seal the practice.
This practice should be considered a sacred ritual, again, enter into it with a clean mind & body.
Practice at a time that’s in the early part of the day, before 1pm.
Choose a time when your roommates or family members are either out of the house or quietly occupied. For instance, you don’t want to space clear on a Saturday morning when your husband and his friends are watching college football.
Take time to enjoy the renewed energy in your home. Pause and tune into how your space feels, how you feel and allow the positive vibes to carry you throughout your day!
